V.A) HOSPITAL NURSES’ STATION. Joanna and Nelson as before.

NELSON – Paige has asked Kyle if he’s married?

JOANNA – Yes. And I’m completely mortified.

NELSON – Oh Joanna, I hardly think it’s anything to worry about. I’m sure the boy was flattered.

JOANNA – He was very kind about it. But how else could he be? He’s clearly not interested in her, but naturally he’d try not to hurt her feelings. I just can’t believe Paige was so forward.

NELSON – But aren’t modern young women supposed to be as "forward" as young men these days?

IV.A) UNIVERSITY HALLWAY. A few people come out of the classroom and then Ashwin and Penny emerge. Penny tugs him to one side.

PENNY – Alright, Ashwin, it’s "later." Now we talk.

ASHWIN – Very well, Penny. Talk about what, exactly?

PENNY – I want to know why you let your mother accuse and criticize me the way you did before class.

ASHWIN – Penny –

PENNY – I mean, you stormed the police station like some kind of kamikaze, but when your mother accused me you were completely quiet. Are you really so afraid of her?

CONNOR – Kyle, what’s wrong? What do you mean, ‘what am I trying to do to you’?

KYLE – I can’t believe you’d come here to see me. Here, where I work! Where all these people can see us!

CONNOR – I told you out there, I came to see my mother. Don’t get so excited.

KYLE – I have good reason! How could you approach me in public, in front of my boss? If she knows you, then she knows you’re gay! What if she sees us together and guesses about us?

II.A) UNIVERSITY HALLWAY. Penny, Ashwin, and Gayatri stand as before. Gayatri folds up the newspaper.

PENNY – Professor Patel, it isn’t what it looks like. It’s quite easy to expl—

GAYATRI – I understand a Political Science student wishing to understand political movements of all kinds. My son studies such things in depth. And I can understand wishing to espouse such a cause.

PENNY – Professor Patel, I really wasn’t –

GAYATRI – But the incitement of violence in a demonstration such as this is highly inappropriate for a person who is supposedly studying in an atmosphere of objectivity. You’ve shown a great deal of promise thus far, Miss Hollister. To say I am disappointed is an understatement.

PENNY – But it was a mistake. Really.

GAYATRI – Precisely my opinion.

I.A) CHAMBERS DESIGN STUDIO. Blythe sits at her desk in her office, head bent over a couple of account books, frowning in concentration. Adrian walks in and seats himself in a chair across the desk from her, draping himself all over it. Only then does Blythe glance up.

BLYTHE – Why Adrian. Do come in. Make yourself at home.

ADRIAN – (GRINS) Thanks. You’re too kind.

BLYTHE – So what brings you here, Adrian, so early in the morning? Shouldn’t you be dancing attendance on uncle Arthur?

ADRIAN – Nope. He’s closeted with all the big shot lawyers on some conference call to Switzerland. I’m not needed till later.

BLYTHE – You don’t qualify as a “bit shot lawyer”?

ADRIAN – Not yet. Give me a couple more years to become indispensable.

BLYTHE – That long?

ADRIAN – I want to sneak up on them gradually.

V. A) CLEARING IN THE WOODS. Moira, Karen, and the older woman stand in the central area with the others around them. The three central women are holding unlit candles. They walk around the altar until they form the three points of a triangle, facing inward. Now Moira lights her own candle from an altar candle.

MOIRA – Tonight we remember Patricia Vickery. She fulfilled many roles in this lifetime, and had a profound effect on many people. She was a friend and benefactress to people, as she participated in several charity and cultural organizations. She fulfilled the role of wife to her husband Arthur. But in honour of our dear companion, Ryan, we remember most of all her role of mother. She was privileged to bring four children into this world: Anastasia, Darcy, and that most sacred and mysterious phenomenon, the twins: Ryan and Kevin. (PAUSE. WITH AMUSEMENT.) How does it feel being a sacred phenomenon, Ryan?

IV. A) CLEARING IN THE WOODS. Moira lifts her right hand, holding it out at waist level, palm down. She begins at the east side of the circle and walks clockwise around it, softly greeting each person as she comes up to him or her. As she walks by Ryan, she slows and touches his hair with her left hand.

MOIRA – Be at peace, dear one.

RYAN – I’m trying…

(SHE MOVES ON AND CONTINUES UNTIL SHE COMPLETES THE CIRCLE. SHE CLOSES HER HAND INTO A FIST AND DROPS HER ARM TO HER SIDE.)

MOIRA – We now stand in a place between the worlds, and outside of time. Feel the peace. Feel the energy and power. Allow yourselves to be enfolded in it. (TAKES A DEEP BREATH AND PAUSES) Rajiv. Perhaps you would invoke the four quarters for us?

DAWN – Well, I wasn’t about to tell you we were demonstrating outside Blythe Chambers’ studio.

RYAN – Blythe. (SHAKES HIS HEAD WITH A WRY SMILE) I can just imagine her reaction.

AUDREY – It wasn’t that bad, till the furs got sprayed.

I.A.) HOLLISTER KITCHEN. Moira, Dawn, and Connor are bustling around the kitchen, collecting various items from cupboards (candles, goblets, a couple of ornate knives, a salt shaker), and putting them in athletic bags. Dawn goes to the back door window and peers out.

MOIRA – I wouldn’t worry, dear. Ryan will be here shortly.

CONNOR – This is all for his benefit, after all. It wouldn’t make sense for him not to show up, after he requested this himself.

DAWN – Oh, I know he’ll be here. I just want it to be now. I just want to know he’s alright, after yesterday.

MOIRA – He’s fine, Dawn. He’s stronger than people think he is. (FILLS A THERMOS WITH TAP WATER AND PUTS IT IN AN ATHLETIC BAG) Connor, how is the temperature outside?

CONNOR – Pretty chilly, and likely to get colder as the evening goes on. I brought some extra warm clothes.

MOIRA – That’s what I expected, so I packed a few things. I hope you’ve got some extra layers on, Dawn?

DAWN – Lots. I’ll be alright. By the way, Connor. How was your hot date last night?

V.A) RUMINATIONS RESTAURANT. There are now three or four customers at a couple of tables, as people are stopping in for morning coffee. Anastasia still sits on the bar stool, watching as Tylor comes back from pouring coffee for a couple of people. Tylor places the coffee pot on the hot plate, and sits down again.

ANASTASIA – So. He’s a nurse at the hospital, he’s honest and caring, and his name’s Kyle. Anything else?

TYLOR – You’ve really got your teeth into this, haven’t you? Almost more than I do.

ANASTASIA – This is no small matter. This is a man. And we’ve both been through bad experiences, so we both know what can happen if we don’t get it right. So tell me more.

KYLE – Is it somehow important? Whether I’m married or not?

PAIGE – Well, it might be, to the women around here.

KYLE – I doubt that. But no, I’m not married.

PAIGE – Why not?

KYLE – (LAUGHS) Excuse me?

DAWN – And did they all turn violent?

ASHWIN – Fortunately none of them did.

DAWN – Then how can you presume –

PENNY – It’s one of the things he studies, Dawn.

DAWN – What?

ASHWIN – Political action and group dynamics. Mob psychology, mob hysteria. Terrorism.

DAWN – Are you calling us terrorists?

I.A) CHAMBERS FASHION DESIGN STUDIO. A back workroom of the studio: there are some wide tables and drafting boards, covered with partially-finished designs on paper, and prototype versions of garments in various stages of completion. A few garments also hang on racks, or dressmakers’ dummies. One area, beside a large loading dock door, has been left clear to receive this morning’s shipment of furs.

Blythe is helping one of her workers shift another table, to make more room. A couple of designers are at work at other tables. A couple of designers are at work at other tables. Audrey enters, munching a granola bar. She spots Blythe, and walks over to help shift the table, still chewing.

BLYTHE – You’re going to gain weight if you keep eating all the time, Audrey.

AUDREY – ‘s a granola bar. (SHE HAS TROUBLE PRONOUNCING “granola” WITH HER MOUTH FULL)

BLYTHE – It’s not the type of food I’m worried about, it’s the sheer volume.

AUDREY – (SWALLOWS HER MOUTHFUL) Don’t worry about volume. This is the first thing I’ve eaten today. It’s breakfast.

BLYTHE – Just so long as you don’t eat the rest of the box before lunch.

AUDREY – (INDIGNANTLY) That’s not fair. When have I ever eaten a whole box of granola bars at one – (SHE STOPS SUDDENLY, AS THOUGH REMEMBERING SOMETHING. BLYTHE LOOKS SIGNIFICANTLY AT HER. SHE HASTILY CHANGES THE SUBJECT.) So. Did anything interesting happen at the Vickery house after I left?

CONNOR – I know what I saw, Kyle. She was showing you off to me.

KYLE – She was introducing me to you. There’s a difference.

CONNOR – I know. My point exactly. (HE RESUMES HIS OWN SEAT)

KYLE - So have I. I feel like it's been weeks since we really talked.

CONNOR - Days, at least. Sit down and relax. Would you like some wine?

AUDREY - What's going on? Why is he -- is it Ryan, or Kevin? -- why is he so mad at -- whoever the other one is?

I. A) RUMINATIONS RESTAURANT. THE DINNER CROWD IS JUST STARTING TO TRICKLE IN; TWO OR THREE DUOS ARE ALREADY SEATED AT TABLES, AND A YOUNG WOMAN IS WALKING TO A TABLE, DUMPING A BACKPACK ON IT AND SITTING DOWN. A WAITRESS DELIVERS A COUPLE OF CAPPUCINOS TO ONE COUPLE, AND THEN GOES OVER TO THE NEWCOMER'S TABLE. THERE IS TRENDY MUSIC COMING OVER THE SPEAKERS. AS HE SPOTS TYLOR SHE WAVES, AND BECKONS HIM OVER.

TYLOR - No problem at all. (SHE LEANS OVER THE BAR AND ASKS THE BARTENDER: ) Is it under there? I put it aside -- (HE RUMMAGES AROUND AND BRINGS UP A BOTTLE IN A BAG) -- that's it, thanks. (TYLOR TAKES IT OUT OF THE BAG AND DISPLAYS IT FOR CONNOR) How's this? Will it do?

CONNOR - It'll more than "do," Tylor. It's exactly right. You're a genius and I owe you. I couldn't believe I forgot to buy wine for tonight.
