I. A) RUMINATIONS RESTAURANT. THE DINNER CROWD IS JUST STARTING TO TRICKLE IN; TWO OR THREE DUOS ARE ALREADY SEATED AT TABLES, AND A YOUNG WOMAN IS WALKING TO A TABLE, DUMPING A BACKPACK ON IT AND SITTING DOWN. A WAITRESS DELIVERS A COUPLE OF CAPPUCINOS TO ONE COUPLE, AND THEN GOES OVER TO THE NEWCOMER'S TABLE. THERE IS TRENDY MUSIC COMING OVER THE SPEAKERS. TYLOR STANDS NEAR THE BAR, CHATTING WITH THE BARTENDER, BUT KEEPING AN EYE ON EVERYTHING THAT'S GOING ON. CONNOR WALKS IN THE DOOR AND PAUSES, LOOKING AROUND. AS HE SPOTS TYLOR SHE WAVES, AND BECKONS HIM OVER.

TYLOR - Hi Connor. How're you doing?

CONNOR - Great, Tylor. Sorry I called so last minute. Were you able to…?

TYLOR - No problem at all. (SHE LEANS OVER THE BAR AND ASKS THE BARTENDER: ) Is it under there? I put it aside -- (HE RUMMAGES AROUND AND BRINGS UP A BOTTLE IN A BAG) -- that's it, thanks. (TYLOR TAKES IT OUT OF THE BAG AND DISPLAYS IT FOR CONNOR) How's this? Will it do?

CONNOR - It'll more than "do," Tylor. It's exactly right. You're a genius and I owe you. I couldn't believe I forgot to buy wine for tonight.

TYLOR - Sounds important. Do you have a special evening planned, with special company?

CONNOR - Well…yes, actually…

TYLOR - I'm intrigued. Who's the lucky guy?

CONNOR - (HESITATES) He's still a bit shy, Tylor, so I can't really say. There are a lot of complications in his life, so it's not very easy for him…

TYLOR - I understand completely. Never mind. But I hope your evening goes well, and I think the wine's definitely going to help.

CONNOR - So do I. Any time you need the favor returned, just let me know and I'm completely at your service.

TYLOR - Oh, I think it'll be quite some time before you can return this kind of favor, Connor.

CONNOR - Why? The ol' love life sort of lagging these days?

TYLOR - Lagging since my divorce a couple of years ago. I suppose I'd be interested in a change…but on the other hand, I do like the unencumbered life quite a lot. It could be nice to be close to someone, but I'm a lot more cautious since my last fiasco.

CONNOR - Sounds pretty grim.

TYLOR - You can't imagine.

CONNOR - Then you'll have to think of a different kind of favor. Maybe I can do dishes for a few days.

TYLOR - A few days? You really do expect a lot from this evening!

CONNOR - (LAUGHS A LITTLE SHEEPISHLY) Well, you know how it is when you first realize you care about somebody…

TYLOR - It was a long time ago but I think I remember. Pretty serious, then?

CONNOR - I'd say so. We're exploring all the possibilities right now. Things look pretty sunny.

TYLOR - "Sunny." (SHE PLAYFULLY PINCHES HIS CHEEK) You boys are so cute when you're in love.

CONNOR - And you're going to tease me for it the rest of my life, I suppose.

TYLOR - With great pleasure. Great enjoyment. Relish, even. And when your friend is finally comfortable in public, I'll tease him too.

CONNOR - (WRYLY) We'll both look forward to it.

(TYLOR PUTS THE BOTTLE BACK IN THE BAG AND GIVES IT TO CONNOR. SHE GLANCES OVER HIS SHOULDER AS ANOTHER PATRON ENTERS, AND ONCE AGAIN SMILES AND BECKONS. AS KYLE COMES OVER, ANOTHER THREE PEOPLE COME IN BEHIND HIM AND GO OVER TO A TABLE.)

TYLOR - The love life may be lagging but the friendships abound lately. I'd like you to meet someone, Connor.

(CONNOR TURNS AND STOPS FOR THE MEREST INSTANT AS HE SEES KYLE. KYLE, HOWEVER, GIVES NO INDICATION THAT THEY KNOW EACH OTHER, BUT LOOKS ON WITH POLITE INTEREST.)

TYLOR - Connor Hollister…this is Kyle Yaworski, another good friend of mine.

KYLE - (HOLDS OUT HIS HAND) I'm pleased to meet you, Connor.

CONNOR - (SHAKES HIS HAND) Same here…Kyle was it? Very glad to meet you.

I.B) VICKERY LIVING ROOM. THE SCENE IS INITIALLY FROZEN: KEVIN IS SITTING ON THE FLOOR, HIS WINE GLASS SMASHED BEHIND HIM, AND WINE SPLATTERED ON THE FLOOR AND WALL. RYAN STANDS OVER HIM, GLARING DOWN, FISTS CLENCHED. DARCY IS BESIDE HIM WITH BOTH HANDS OVER HER MOUTH. BEHIND RYAN STANDS ANASTASIA, AND BEHIND HER ARE ARTHUR AND JUSTIN. THERE ARE VOICES FROM OUT OF SIGHT, COMING FROM THE VESTIBULE, PROVIDING AN ALMOST SURREAL BACKGROUND TO THE FROZEN TABLEAU IN THE LIVING ROOM.

KEVIN FINALLY MOVES, NOT GETTING UP, BUT BRUSHING A LITTLE, CALMLY, AT HIS PANT LEGS.

KEVIN - What did you hit me for?

RYAN - I'll hit you again -- I'll ram your perfect teeth right down your throat! Go ahead. Stand up so I can do it again!

KEVIN - Perhaps I'll stay here then...

RYAN - Fine. I've still got feet.

DARCY - Oh no, you wouldn't --

KEVIN - Will you kindly tell me what's got you in such a temper?

RYAN - A temper? You can actually ask? You bastard!

ARTHUR - (STRIDES FORWARD AT LAST) Ryan, watch your language! We have guests walking into our house at this moment!

RYAN - So what? Why should I care about that? Why should I care about anything? (POINTS AT KEVIN) He doesn't!

(ARTHUR LEANS A HAND DOWN, WHICH KEVIN TAKES AND USES TO STAND TO HIS FEET. ARTHUR HELPS HIM DUST OFF, NODDING BRISKLY TO A BUTLER TO TAKE CARE OF THE GLASS AND THE SPILLED WINE.)

ARTHUR - Are you alright, son? Did you hurt yourself?

KEVIN - I'm fine. (HE GINGERLY TOUCHES THE SIDE OF HIS MOUTH.) I may have an impressive bruise before I'm done, though. Would you care to hit the other side, Ryan: In the interests of symmetry.

RYAN - Gladly -- (STARTS FORWARD BUT ARTHUR GRABS HIS ARM)

ARTHUR - Stop it -- both of you! I know you're both under a lot of stress but brawling in front of all our guests is not the way to handle it. I forbid it. Do you understand?

KEVIN - I have no intention of "brawling," father. Perhaps Ryan needs the warning, but I don't. I have no idea why he's so upset. Apart from the obvious reason of mother's funeral.

RYAN - Which you didn't even bother to attend!

(THEY STARE AT EACH OTHER, RYAN ANGRILY AND KEVIN IMPASSIVELY. THERE IS A LONG PAUSE.)

KEVIN - (SOFTLY) You stupid fool.

RYAN - What the hell is that supposed to mean?

ARTHUR - Ryan, your language --

KEVIN - It means that I was there, Ryan.

RYAN - "There"...where?

KEVIN - At mother's funeral. I thought that's what we were talking about…? I was there, and you didn't bother checking before you jumped to conclusions. It wouldn't bother me so much if it weren't my bones you were trying to break as a result. (HE LOOKS AROUND, AGAIN TOUCHING HIS BRUISED MOUTH) I seem to have misplaced my drink. Excuse me while I get another.

(HE WALKS OVER TO WHERE THE DRINKS ARE AND GETS ANOTHER ONE. RYAN STARES AFTER HIM, UNCERTAINLY, DISBELIEVINGLY, NOT SURE IF HE SHOULD STILL BE ANGRY.)
