I.A) CHAMBERS FASHION DESIGN STUDIO. A back workroom of the studio: there are some wide tables and drafting boards, covered with partially-finished designs on paper, and prototype versions of garments in various stages of completion. A few garments also hang on racks, or dressmakers’ dummies. One area, beside a large loading dock door, has been left clear to receive this morning’s shipment of furs.

Blythe is helping one of her workers shift another table, to make more room. A couple of designers are at work at other tables. A couple of designers are at work at other tables. Audrey enters, munching a granola bar. She spots Blythe, and walks over to help shift the table, still chewing.

BLYTHE – You’re going to gain weight if you keep eating all the time, Audrey.

AUDREY – ‘s a granola bar. (SHE HAS TROUBLE PRONOUNCING “granola” WITH HER MOUTH FULL)

BLYTHE – It’s not the type of food I’m worried about, it’s the sheer volume.

AUDREY – (SWALLOWS HER MOUTHFUL) Don’t worry about volume. This is the first thing I’ve eaten today. It’s breakfast.

BLYTHE – Just so long as you don’t eat the rest of the box before lunch.

AUDREY – (INDIGNANTLY) That’s not fair. When have I ever eaten a whole box of granola bars at one – (SHE STOPS SUDDENLY, AS THOUGH REMEMBERING SOMETHING. BLYTHE LOOKS SIGNIFICANTLY AT HER. SHE HASTILY CHANGES THE SUBJECT.) So. Did anything interesting happen at the Vickery house after I left?

(THE TABLE IS NOW IN PLACE. BLYTHE STRAIGHTENS AND MURMURS “THANK YOU” TO THE OTHER WORKER, WHO GOES OVER TO ONE OF THE DUMMIES AND STARTS MAKING SMALL ADJUSTMENTS WITH PINS. BLYTHE SURVEYS THE OPEN SPACE A LITTLE ABSENTLY.)

BLYTHE – That’s rather an odd question to ask about a reception following a funeral service: ‘did anything interesting happen?’

AUDREY – Well, it was kind of eventful. For a few minutes there, anyway. So did anything else happen?

BLYTHE – Oh certainly. The twins renewed their hostilities, Kevin stabbed Ryan with a butter knife, and then he talked incessantly about you while they were carting the body away.

AUDREY – (ROLLS HER EYES) I suppose you’re not going to answer me at all?

BLYTHE – Nothing else “happened” in the sense you mean. There was just a lot of milling around, with everybody sympathizing with everyone else. And Kevin and Ryan were quite close to friendly terms again by the time we all left. So there you have it. No bloodshed to report. Does that relieve or disappoint you?

AUDREY – Well, relieve, Blythe, what d’you think? It scared me, the way the other one – Ryan – the way he knocked Kevin down.

BLYTHE – It surprised everyone. But Ryan is a little unruly sometimes. Kevin’s much more sane and predictable.

AUDREY – (FIDGETS) Did he…say anything…about me?

BLYTHE – Kevin? Oh, we chatted a little about you, yes. (SHE STOPS THERE, DELIBERATEELY)

AUDREY – Come on, Blythe, tell me what he said!

BLYTHE – He was impressed that you were modeling for me, and he was grateful that you’d helped him out. He even thought you were nice.

AUDREY – Wow… (A LITTLE BREATHLESSLY)

BLYTHE – But he knows you’re too young for more than that, Audrey.

AUDREY – I’ll be eighteen in a couple of months, you know.

BLYTHE – What difference does that make? He’s a graduate student in the business world, with education and experience beyond anything you’ve dreamed of so far. And he’s from a wealthy family, and has seen a great deal of the world. He’s acutely aware of the gaps between you, Audrey. Trust me on this one. Trust us both.

AUDREY – (DOESN’T APPEAR CONVINCED, BUT OBLIGINGLY RESPONDS TO BLYTHE) Alright, alright. I get your point. It was still fun to meet him. And his brother.

BLYTHE – You met Ryan too? When was that?

AUDREY – At the service. Before it started.

BLYTHE – My my, you did accomplish a lot yesterday, Audrey. Very impressive. But you haven’t mentioned your class last night. How did it go?

AUDREY – It would’ve been great, except for this guy there. I met him in the garage and he wouldn’t let me eat in peace, so I complained, and they were going to kick him out, but he pretended it was his own idea, so when I walked in and found him there, I was so mad I just could’ve spit nails!

BLYTHE – (STARES AT HER IN STUNNED SILENCE FOR A LONG TIME) What were you doing eating in a garage? (AUDREY LOOKS BLANK) No. Never mind. I don’t want to know. We have too much to do this morning. I wonder if they’ve arrived yet…

AUDREY – The furs? Well, if they were here, wouldn’t they ring the bell like usual?

BLYTHE – I don’t mean the furs, I mean the protestors.

AUDREY – The what?

BLYTHE – The protestors. (AUDREY LOOKS BLANK AGAIN) Audrey, don’t you ever listen when anyone speaks in this studio? Don’t you know that we’re expecting a riot this morning?

(AUDREY STARES, HER MOUTH DROPPING OPEN)

I.B) THE RUMINATIONS RESTAURANT. Tylor sits on a high stool at the bar, with a couple of ledgers open in front of her. She sticks a pen in her mouth and stares into the distance, daydreaming. But then she sighs and bends back to the ledgers with a frown of determination. Most of the lights are dimmed. After a moment, the door opens and Anastasia steps in. She stops briefly, allowing her eyes to adjust to the dimmer light.

ANASTASIA – Hello? Tylor, is that you?

TYLOR – (LOOKS UP QUICKLY AND SMILES) Anastasia! Come in! I didn’t know if I’d see you today.

ANASTASIA – (APPROACHES THE BAR AND SITS ON A STOOL BESIDE TYLOR) Why not? I look forward to our morning coffees. It’s a relaxing tradition, before the business day gets started.

TYLOR – I agree with that, but I wasn’t sure you’d be opening the gallery today. You know, the day after…

ANASTASIA – The day after I buried my mother. You know, Tylor, I’ve had this whole week off, and I decided I just couldn’t stand it any longer. You can only stay home and cry for so long before you just have to think about something else. For self-preservation, if for no other reason.

TYLOR – I understand. And if I know you, you’ve been carrying the rest of your family on your shoulders for the past four days. It can’t have been easy.

ANASTASIA – Oh, Darcy alone would’ve been enough. Fortunately, Justin has been there to console her most of the time, so I didn’t have to worry about her as much as I expected to. Ryan and Kevin, on the other hand…

TYLOR – Taking it hard?

ANASTASIA – Ryan especially. He was very close to mother. But Kevin…

TYLOR – What about him?

ANASTASIA – I don’t know. He’s very cool, as he usually is. But I just have this odd feeling about him. As though there are things going on that he’s not letting on… (HER VOICE FADES AND STARES INTO THE DISTANCE, LOOKING WORRIED. THEN SHE SHAKES HER HEAD A LITTLE) I have to stop this, Tylor.

TYLOR – Stop what?

ANASTASIA – Worry about everybody. Wallowing in…everything. It’s going to drive me crazy, if I don’t get my mind on something else, just for a little while.

TYLOR – We can change the subject then, if you like.

ANASTASIA – Please. Tell me something interesting. Something new.

TYLOR – Hmmm…I think you’ve stumped me. Unless – (STOPS AS A SUDDEN THOUGHT OCCURS TO HER. SHE LOOKS FLUSTERED.)

ANASTASIA – What?

TYLOR – What do you mean?

ANASTASIA – You’re thinking of something. Do you have something to tell me?

TYLOR – Well…I don’t know, really…it’s so vague and nebulous right now…

ANASTASIA – But there is something. So let’s hear it, Tylor.

(TYLOR LOOKS A LITTLE SHEEPISH. TAPS HER PEN ON THE COUNTER A FEW TIMES, THEN STARTS IN A BIT OF A RUSH)

TYLOR – Alright. Remember, I’m not really sure about this. I’ve only just started noticing the signs, and I could be imagining them. So this could all be nothing, and I don’t want to jump to conclusions –

ANASTASIA – Tylor. I promise I’ll keep all these qualifications in mind. Now. What is it?

TYLOR – Well…I’m not sure, but…I think there may potentially be a new man in my life.

I.C) ALLEY BEHIND BLYTHE’S STUDIO. A few people are already standing near the loading dock door, and a few more straggle in throughout this scene. Dawn, Barb, and Penny are standing nearest the door. Dawn looks around nervously, while Barb appears quite comfortable. Penny is merely interested and curious because she doesn’t intend to stay.

PENNY – So what is it you’re going to do, really? A lot of shouting and shoving?

BARB – That’s usually what it amounts to. Just to register our presence, and hopefully make our point.

PENNY – Do the fashion designers pay attention? Do they listen to you?

BARB – Not usually.

PENNY – Then what’s the point?

BARB – Public awareness. The designers will continue to use and sell fur as long as there’s a demand for it. So we have a roundabout goal: create public awareness so the demand goes down. And the use of fur will be much less lucrative, and therefore less attractive, to the designer.

PENNY – That sounds overly optimistic to me.

BARB – It’s actually worked in some areas. (SHE GLANCES AT DAWN) So, is Ryan coming, do you think?

DAWN – No. I didn’t even tell him about it.

BARB – I thought not. He’s got a lot on his mind right now.

DAWN – Well, that, and also the fact that Blythe Chambers is a close friend of his family. I didn’t want to involve him in a clash of loyalties.

PENNY – I’d think it’s bound to happen eventually, Dawn.

DAWN – Probably. But it’s the last thing he needs right now.

BARB – He knows Blythe Chambers? I didn’t realize that.

DAWN – I gather they’re almost like cousins, or something like that. There’s a brother too, I understand. I’ve heard they’re both insufferable snobs.

PENNY – Is that Ryan’s opinion too?

DAWN – Well…not quite. But he grew up really close to them. And you know how family closeness can warp your view of other family members. Give you an overly optimistic view of their good points. (SHE GRINS AT PENNY)

PENNY – (LAUGHS) Thank you so much. And on that note, I think I’ll take my – (STOPS ABRUPTLY, AS ASHWIN PATEL APPROACHES, LOOKING ODDLY AT THE SCATTERED CROWD) Oh. My goodness.

DAWN – What? (LOOKS AROUND AND SPOTS ASHWIN) Who’s that?

PENNY – Someone form the Poli Sci program. Ashwin. Hello. What are you doing here? Are you going to protest too?

ASHWIN – I noticed the crowd, and then I saw you down here, so I thought I’d find out what’s going on. What do you mean, ‘protest’?

DAWN – There’s a shipment of furs being delivered here this morning. We’re protesting the cruelty and exploitation of the animals.

PENNY – Ashwin, this is my cousin, Dawn Hollister. And this is Barb…Barb? I forgot your last name.

BARB – Hamilton.

PENNY – Oh, that’s right. And this is Ashwin Patel, a friend of mine from Political Science.

BARB – Nice to meet you, Ashwin. Dawn and I are in Environmental Design.

DAWN – Hi.

ASHWIN – Hello. Are you ‘protesting’ too, Penny?

PENNY – No. I thought I might watch for a while, to see what happens. But I’m on my way to the library.

ASHWIN – Good.

BARB – Good? (SHE RAISES HER EYEBROWS)

ASHWIN – I intend no offence. But I was a little concerned, to think Penny might be involved directly in this protest.

DAWN (BRISTLES A LITTLE) I beg your pardon? Why should that concern you?

ASHWIN – As I said, I intend no offence. I’m a vegetarian, and I don’t believe in killing animals for fur, either. But I also don’t believe in violence.

DAWN. – Violence. Come on, now…

ASHWIN – Surely you know from experience that these protests tend to become violent. (THEY JUST STARE AT HIM) I’ve observed these various movements, and such events frequently go out of control.

BARB – We only plan to wave a few signs and try to obstruct the delivery for a while.

ASHWIN – Obstruct? How?

BARB – I don’t know. Maybe stand in front of the truck for a few minutes…?

DAWN – And what business is it of yours?

PENNY – Dawn…

ASHWIN – I just don’t want to see anyone get hurt.

DAWN – We’re not stupid, you know. We have no intention of hurting anybody, or getting hurt.

ASHWIN – You don’t. But what about the rest of these people? Do you know all of them?

DAWN – Well, no, but –

ASHWIN – Surely you realize that protests like this are a magnet for extremists and troublemakers who have no interest in your cause? What are you going to do if such people show up and cause trouble? (NO REPLY. HE SEEMS ASTONISHED.) You haven’t even thought about it, have you? If things become violent, you have no idea at all what you’ll do. Have you? (HE LOOKS FROM DAWN TO BARB, THEN LOOKS INCREDULOUSLY AT PENNY, WHO STANDS THERE UNCOMFORTABLY.)
