Continuing with sucide speculation: Roy sent Ed and Al away so that they didn't figure out what was going on before he got to off himself in a spectacular finale.
. . . And if he's not consciously suicidal, could he be sleep-walking? Sleep-alchemising? :P And he just slowly gets lazier and lazier, and doesn't go as far from home before he sets fire to things in his sleep.
