Wow... I'm really late commenting, sorry about that. I read it at the same time as mebh (we were sharing speculation on the ending, it was quite fun) but for some reason I didn't get round to commenting.
Anyway, this story was as brilliant as I'd expect from you, wonderfully written as always and such an interesting, original idea. The way you kept the truth of what was wrong with Roy from the reader until the team learnt of it, only giving tiny hints, was really well done- I had actually no idea until they saw that his body wasn't there. I loved riza and how strong and certain she is once she realises what she needs to do. I found this little bit really quite amusing though: " “It’s simple, really,” he said. “Roy Mustang has become like me.”
“He’s nothing like – “ Ed began,"
for some reason I found that really funny. Trust Ed to think like that. :D
I loved Roy and Riza's relationship in this story. It was your stories that converted me to royai in the first place, and you're still the best at writing the quiet, subtle love between them. The bit when she kissed his hand where his cut had healed was just so romantic and lovely. And the ending... It was just so bittersweet, it left me in a very confused bundle of emotions, wondering if I should be happy or sad. Yes, Roy got to spend over 20 years with riza and his children, and al and ed got the same with mei and winry and their kids, but then they had to leave them! Thinking about it, it really is tragic. And you really made me sympathise so much more with hohenheim in canon because of this story. I always liked him as a character but you made me really understand how he must have felt, being immortal and so lonely and having to leave Trisha. This story was so wonderful and I can't wait till it's up on ff.net for everyone to see. :D
